Samsung has sent out invitations to an event in which the company will
unveil its "new flagship product." The Unpacked 2014 Episode 1 show will
take place in Barcelona on Monday February 24th — the opening day of
Mobile World Congress, which is held in the Spanish city. The invitation
makes references to the number 5, suggesting that the world may get its
first glimpse of the upcoming Galaxy S5.
Samsung announced its current flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, at a controversial Broadway-style Unpacked event in New York City last March. When reached for comment by The Verge, a Samsung spokesperson said, "We can't tell you what '5' means."
Samsung is reportedly planning to launch the S5 before April,
and is said to be considering an iris scanner alongside a new physical
design. "When we moved to S4 from S3, it’s partly true that consumers
couldn’t really feel much difference between the two products from the
physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn’t as big," said mobile
executive VP Lee Young-hee in an interview with Bloomberg News
last month. "For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s
about the display and the feel of the cover." A new version of the
Galaxy Gear smartwatch is expected to make its debut with the S5.
